While the game won’t be at the upper echelon of fighting games, fans looking to experience the One Piece cast in a fighting game will love the big roster and how great the characters look. On the plus side, online mode worked well overall without any serious connection issues. The game also can be a tad spammy, with many matches devolving to trading specials instead of making the most of Burning Blood’s more technical elements. Speaking of unfair matchups, game balance can be out of whack, with stronger characters having unfair advantages against weaker ones.

A Unity Clash, meanwhile, serves as a counter of sorts for cancelling your enemies’ Unity moves. A Unity Attack, for example, allows you to layer combos on foes while a Unity Assist interrupts an enemy combo being inflicted on you. To add some more technical mechanics, Burning Blood also throws in “Unity” moves involving a partner. You can also enter a powered-up state that allows you to boost your fighting effectiveness and dish out a powerful final move to either push your advantage or bring yourself back from the jaws of defeat. The special attacks can be fun to pull off, allowing you to dish out some crazy moves. Also included are blocks, guard breaks, counters and flashy specials for that extra oomph in terms of presentation. You have staples such as regular attacks that can be easily chained into basic combos and also reinforced.

On paper, the concept certainly looks fine. The gameplay for its actual combat, on the other hand, is more of a mixed bag. Whether it be stalwarts such as Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates or the more crazy designs of folks such as Emporio Ivankov or Moria, Burning Blood’s production values are impressive. This includes attention to all sorts of details in terms of look, voice and fighting style for the series’ cast of kooky characters. The game features a look that wonderfully merges 3D models with a cel-shaded style that makes Burning Blood look like an anime show come to life. It’s a tradition that continues with Burning Blood for sure.
